Workshop on Facing Disability with Confidence

In continuation of the disability day celebrated on the 17th of January 2024, the Committee on Disability Access and Inclusion of the Faculty of Arts with the financial assistance of the New Life Foundation, Kilinochchi organized a workshop on the title “Facing Disability with Confidence on the 23rd of March 2023 at the Arts Seminar Hall from 9 am to 2 pm. Students from the Faculty of Arts and a student from the Faculty of Science attended the workshop.

Mr. V.Vishukanthan, the Deputy Director/Special Education of Department of Education /Northern Province served as one of the resource persons. Mr.VIshnukaran’s presentation focused on examination regulations for the differently-abled students stipulated by the government. He explained in detail the linguistic challenges faced by differently-abled students and the mechanisms available for addressing those challenges. Detailing the employment opportunities available for differently-abled persons, Mr. Vishnukathan shared some suggestions on how differently-abled persons could take advantage of these opportunities.
Fr. Rohan Sujeevan formerly the Director of Vanni Rehabilitation for differently abled and presently the Director of Claretian Biblical Apostolate also served as a resource person. His presentation explored the ways in which those who are differently-abled can develop self-confidence and become agents of empowerment and change in their own communities and beyond. He made the participants reflect upon their life goals and how they could live without being worried or anxious about their future. He brought in the paradigm of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) to help the student participants understand the ways in which the health, education, livelihoods, empowerment and the social progress of the differently abled persons are inter-linked.
The participants engaged in a discussion with the resource persons and among themselves during both sessions.
