Geography was one of the disciplines introduced since the establishment of the University of Jaffna in the mid 1970s. The Department of Geography has always been a vibrant centre for undergraduate teaching and research and has attached highly motivated students. At present, the Department of Geography offers undergraduate degrees in two disciplines namely Geography and Community and Regional Planning and promotes theoretical and applied realms in both degree programs. Moreover, the Department provides qualified supervisors for M.Phil and Ph.D programmes and helps with laboratory facilities for the said programmes conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Jaffna.
We make fundamental contributions to the advancement of Geography and Planning studies by providing best education to students and equip them to meet the challenges associated with the continuing evolution to the subjects concerned and carrier development. Our staff are committed and couraged and work with teamwork spirits towards the advancement of knowledge and in serving communities at regional and national levels.
Our Geography study programme reflects the breadth of the discipline in ‘location intelligence’ and ‘Spatial Thinking’ incorporating modern subjects and field training. Our planning study programme provides theory and practice in the field of community, city and regional planning perspectives with components of industrial training and field studies.
