Day for the Differently Abled – 2024

A well-received day for the differently abled was celebrated on the 17th of January 2024 at the Kailasapathy Auditorium, University of Jaffna from 2 pm to 7 pm. The Committee on Disability Access and Inclusion (CDAI), Faculty of Arts organized the above and the event was the first of its kind.

The event was presided over by Mrs Kosalai Mathan, the chairperson, CDAI. Prof.S.Srisatkunaraja, the Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna graced the occasion as the chief guest. Prof.S.Raguram, the Dean, Faculty of Arts was the special guest of the event. The heads of various institutions that support the differently abled in various capacities were invited as guests of honour for the event.

The objective of the event was to provide a platform for the differently abled to showcase their hidden talents and thereby gain recognition from society. Various programmes by the differently abled students of Valvaham, Nuffield, Sivapoomi, and University of Jaffna were staged ranging from singing and dancing to debating. Several speeches were delivered by the guests and a motivational speech was delivered by Mr. K. Tharmasekaram, a proud product of University of Jaffna to encourage and motivate the differently abled.

As part of the event competitions were conducted among the differently abled undergraduate students by the CDAI and the winners were awarded with medals and certificates.

The event was sponsored by Canadian and American branches of the New Life Foundation. To add more value and meaning to the event, a workshop for the differently abled has been proposed to be conducted soon. The event was a great success and the annual celebration of such events would result in making a difference in the lives of the differently-abled.
